VMX files are saved in a text format and are typically stored within the .VMWAREVM package; the settings within the VMX file may be edited with a text editor.

NOTE:

If the virtual machine was created with an earlier version of VMware Workstation on a Linux machine, the configuration file may have a .CFG extension.
